Study Design

Data Collection Period

A randomly-selected, cross-sectional sample of New Zealand adults completed the interviewer-administered New Zealand Sport and Physical Activity Survey. Participants were recruited throughout New Zealand. To account for seasonal differences, the sample was stratified by each season of the survey year.

Sampling Methodology

The sampling methodology was designed to provide high-level information about sport, recreation and physical activity levels across 12 different regions. These regions were based on the boundaries of the 17 regional sports trusts. The 12 regions were:

  • Central Auckland
  • Bay of Plenty
  • Canterbury and Westland
  • Counties Manukau
  • Hawkes Bay and Gisborne
  • North Harbour and Sport Waitakere
  • Northland
  • Otago and Southland
  • Taranaki, Wanganui and Manawatu
  • Tasman
  •  Waikato
  • Wellington

At least 250 participants were interviewed in each of the 12 regions.

To ensure respondents were selected at random, interviewers listed each person in the household over 18 years of age and selected the one who most recently celebrated their birthday.
