Across all three time points (1997/98, 1998/99, 2000/01), the samples for the New Zealand Sport and Physical Activity Survey was drawn from the New Zealand population aged 18 years plus living in permanent private dwellings, excluding offshore islands.
Between 1997 and 2001, data were collected from 12,569 adults through face-to-face interviews.
At dwellings where young people aged five to 17 years were living, information was collected about young people's sport and active leisure. The questions about young people's sport and active leisure were answered by the adult respondent. However, if the young person, or someone who knew the young person better than the respondent, was present when the interview was carried out, they could help to answer the questions.
The adult respondents provided proxy-reported data for 4,116 young people.
