SPARC Facts 1997-2001

Involvement as a coach, referee, administrator and parent helper

Adults were also asked whether or not they were involved as a coach/instructor, a referee or other official, an administrator and/or as a parent helper in the past 12 months. 27% of adults have been involved in one or more of these roles. Adults who have been involved in the first three roles, i.e. as a coach/instructor, a referee or other official and/or an administrator, were also asked if they were paid, with 88% of them indicating that they were involved as an unpaid “volunteer”.

Adults aged 35-49 years and Māori are more likely to be involved in one or more of these roles than their respective counterparts. Adults from other ethnic groups are the least likely to be involved in any of these roles.
